The March 23 issue of the Chronicle of Philanthropy profiled web sites that allow users to generate donations for an organization just by clicking and viewing the site. The most well known is probably the Hunger Site [http://www.thehungersite.com], which generates donations from advertisers to the United Nations World Food Programme each time a visitor visits the site (limited to one visit each day).

Once upon a time in Silicon Valley, way back in 1995, I sat in a conference room at Apple Computer headquarters with a small group of key nonprofit representatives, the head of Apple’s community relations department, and two co-founders of a new nonprofit organization called Impact Online, Cindy Shove and Steve Glikbarg.

Cindy, Steve and I had met online — then face-to-face — just a few months earlier, via the soc.org.nonprofit newsgroup. We had become fast friends, as we all believed the importance of Internet and other computer technologies would continue to grow exponentially over the next few months and that it was imperative that nonprofit organizations make a commitment to get online and integrate new technology use into their organization’s work. We were in that conference room to evangelize to key sector leaders, and to talk about how some agencies were already tapping into the technology potential.
